Daniel Johnson MSP published – on 22 January – his consultation proposals for a members’ bill that will create new offences around assault and abuse of workers who are involved in the sale of age restricted items like alcohol and tobacco.

It sets out a further proposal of creating a statutory aggravation when these cases do come to be sentenced which could achieve similar aims.

The Scottish Grocers Federation would encourage you, if you have not already done so, to respond to Daniel’s consultation. Retailers Against Crime fully supports the proposal.

It is important that the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament recognise the importance of what is being proposed and so get his bill passed into law.

This represents a once-in-generation opportunity to make shops in Scotland safer for staff, customers and communities.

The consultation period closes on 20 April 2018. The consultation and information about how to submit a response can be found at: www.notpartofthejob.com
